Conceptual Definition, Content Validity and Dimensionality of the Internationalisation Construct

Pumela Msweli

Abstract

This study empirically captures the complex multidimensional nature of internationalisation within the South African higher education sector by developing a means of measuring the construct. The study starts off by specifying the domain of the internationalisation construct. Factor analysis was used to analyse interrelationships among identified internationalisation indicators and to explain the indicators in terms of their underlying dimensions. The result was the identification of 16 indicators loading highly on four factors. The four factors were interpreted as relating to the concepts of (1) teaching, learning and community engagement in the African context; (2) international research collaboration; (3) internationalisation strategy; and (4) intercultural activities. Four subscales of internationalisation were created and summated to create an overall measure of internationalisation.
