A conceptual framework for a mentoring model for nurse educators

E Seekoe

Abstract

Transformation in South Africa resulted in changes in the mandate of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Therefore, the need to design a mentoring model for recruiting and retaining nurse educators to meet the demands of teaching and learning became evident. The aim of the study was to develop a conceptual framework for a mentoring model for newly appointed nurse educators in HEIs in South Africa. Both quantitative and qualitative research approaches focusing on reasoning strategies, literature control and empirical data from the exploratory factor analysis were utilised to develop a framework for the mentoring model. The main concepts shaping development of the conceptual framework were context, role players, competency development, performance improvement and reflective practice. This conceptual framework is recommended as the basis for designing a mentoring model for newly appointed nurse educators in nursing education institutions in South Africa.
