Electronic mentoring and academic librarians: a case study

A Finlayson

Abstract

This study examined the possibilities of e-mentoring to foster research skills
among librarians in an academic library and information services environment. A small pilot project was set up with the purpose of identifying
attitudes to e-mentoring; elements of a suitable online architecture; and
hurdles to implementing such a programme at the University of KwaZulu-
Natal. The goals of e-mentoring were to provide support to colleagues in
their research; to facilitate mutual learning; and to build a sense of community. Findings revealed that time was a major constraint and participants felt the realisation of goals was limited. Recommendations and
a list of research skills which can be developed among participants through
e-mentoring are presented.
