Le developpement olympique du kayak Africain : Anglophonie vs. Francophonie ?

Abstract

Si le kayak de slalom s’est développé récemment en Afrique (premier Championnat continental organisé en 2009), il a été médiatisé à la faveur de sa reconnaissance olympique. Mais quels sont les enjeux culturels du développement olympique du kayak en Afrique francophone ? Comment cette activité a-t-elle pu émerger et par quels biais s’est-elle diffusée ? La seule médaille africaine dans ce sport a été gagnée par un kayakiste francophone, Benjamin Boukpeti du Togo, médaillé de bronze aux Jeux Olympiques de Pékin en 2008. En s’appuyant sur douze entretiens, l’article se focalise sur la sociologie des dispositifs de développement du slalom et les relations politiques entre des pays francophones et le diktat de nations anglophones. Des rapports de domination se jouent entre nations concurrentes. Pour en mesurer les effets, l’indicateur à prendre en compte est la participation olympique. Depuis son introduction aux J.O en 1972, quatre nations africaines y ont participé en sept olympiades. A l’origine, les sud-africains ont été les premiers participants car le kayak était un sport officiel durant l’Apartheid.

English Abstract

If canoeing slalom was recently developed in Africa (first Continental Championship held in 2009), it was publicized thanks to its Olympic recognition. But what are the cultural challenges of the Olympic Development kayaking in Francophone Africa? How this activity she was able to emerge and by what means did she run? The only African medal in the sport was won by a french kayaker Benjamin Boukpeti of Togo, bronze medalist at the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008. Based on twelve interviews, the article focuses on the sociology of development of slalom and political relations between French-speaking countries and the diktat of English-speaking nations. Domination reports are played between competing nations. To measure the effects, the indicator to consider is the Olympic participation. Since its introduction to the Olympics in 1972, four African nations took part in seven Olympics. Originally, the South African were the first participants because the kayak was an official sport during apartheid period.
