Abstract

Specialized translation refers to the translation of documents from specialized domains such as Science and Technology, Legal, Medical, Economics etc. Medical translation belongs to the specialized domain. Medical texts are written by specialists and addressed to other specialists of the medical domain. In translation, it is widely believed that only literary texts are culture bound. Practically, medical documents are also affected by culture in that each nation and each linguistic group has different ways of viewing ailments. Thus a medical text is at the same time scientific and technical, cultural and social. It is scientific because of the specialized language it uses. Its scientific nature is due to its rigorous method. Its cultural aspect is seen in the fact that it deals with health issues that vary from one country to the other. The social aspect can be seen in its constant evolution. As a result, the translator of a medical text is not only confronted with problems of translation in general but also with the specific problems involved in translating medical texts. Apart from the problem of understanding the text, difficulties of medical texts can be linked to the specificity of the different domains. Each domain has its own medical language. For example to describe Down’s syndrome, a clinician talks of mongolism whereas a geneticist talks of trisomy. Problem emanates equally with the terminology used by doctors. Some of these problems might not be found in all medical texts. Our concentration will be on the problems we encountered while translating a text on HIV/AIDS from the English language to the Igbo language, a language spoken in the eastern part of Nigeria.
