Abstract

Selenium is a trace element that plays a role in human immunity. As an essential cofactor in selenoproteins, selenium is required forendogenous enzymatic activities that protect cells againsttoxic free oxygen radicals. Oxidative stress occurs in several pathological states, including selenium deficiency, so it has been postulated that selenium has a role in immune function. Immune dysfunction, susceptibility to viral infections and increased mortality are some of the outcomes associated with selenium deficiency.
