Instructions to Authors
Editorial policy: The Journal publishes original contributions (articles, discussions of articles previously published, review articles and book reviews) within any field of Philosophy. Articles submitted to this journal, or articles by the same author of which the contents significantly overlap with articles submitted to this journal, may not be submitted to other journals without informing the editors of the SAJP.
All articles and review articles will be submitted to referees.
Copyright of all published material is vested in The Philosophical Society of Southern Africa. However, authors bear full responsibility for the contents of their own contributions. All opinions expressed in contributions in the Journal are those of the authors, and are not necessarily subscribed to by the Editors, the Editorial Board or The Philosophical Society of Southern Africa. Papers accepted will be published, as far as possible, in the order in which they are received. Page fees are charged for published articles and review articles.
From time to time special (thematic) numbers will be prepared by guest editors.
Language policy: The journal normally publishes articles in English. Articles in any other South African language may be submitted. Articles in languages other than English will only be published if they are cost effectively refereeable, and if accompanied by a substantial English summary (1000-1500 words) to facilitate information retrieval by international abstracting agencies.
Presentation of manuscripts: Three clear error-free typewritten copies of the manuscript should be submitted. Use A4 format and use one side of the paper only. Use double spacing (1.2) with generous margins. Indent all paragraphs, and avoid breaking words at the end of a line, except where a hyphen occurs. Each article must be preceded by an abstract in English. The author may also provide an abstract in any other South African language (maximum length of each: 200 words).
The abstract should give the content of the article concisely and should be both suitable for separate publication and adequate for indexing and abstracting agencies.
Alternatively, submit a computer disk or attach the article to an e-mail addressed to the Editor (see bottom of this page) – any Microsoft Word format is acceptable: MS-Word 5, MS-Word 6, MS-Word 7, MS-Word 2000 and MS-Word Office XP. Fontype & Font Size: Times New Roman, 10 point. Save the document file in Rich Text Format: *.RTF).
The first page should contain the title of the article, the author’s (authors’) name(s) and address(es), and the name and address of the author to whom correspondence should be addressed. Start the abstract(s) and the article itself on a new page. This second page should again contain the title of the article.
Two kinds of references are distinguished: notes and bibliographical references. The first should appear at the bottom of the page (footnotes – please DO NOT use endnotes!) with references in arabic numbers. Bibliographies should contain only titles referred to in the text and the notes. For bibliographical references, which are also listed at the end of the text, the Harvard method should be used. Consult recent issues of the
Journal for typographical techniques.
Quotations must preferably be in English. Where other languages are quoted, an English translation of the quotation must be provided in a note.
Discussions may usually not exceed three typewritten pages. Notes may usually not exceed 200 words.
Manuscripts for publication must be submitted to: The Editor, South African Journal of Philosophy, Department of Philosophy, University of Fort Hare, 50 Church Street, East London, 5201, South Africa.
