China in Nigeria: Challenges for Nigeria’s economic development 2000-2023.
Abstract
The 21st century is marked by a significant increase in China's interest and presence in Africa, driven by regional and national development challenges faced by countries across the continent, such as Nigeria. China has set itself apart from other developed nations through its rapid economic and technological advancements. The bilateral trade relationship between Nigeria and China is driven by China’s interest in Nigeria’s oil resources and Nigeria’s desire for Chinese investments, both in technology and other sectors. This study identifies and discusses pivotal aspects of China-Nigeria relations, including trade, investment, infrastructure development, and political cooperation. Potential benefits include accelerated economic growth, improved infrastructure, and enhanced access to the global market. It also explores the implications of China’s activities for Nigerian national development, including economic dependency and environmental concerns.
