Abstract

The index case which is being presented is a 27 year old multigravid multiparous trader that was eventually diagnosed asnephrotic syndrome in pregnancy which was being managed as preeclampsia. The patient subsequently had a renal biopsy done which showed minimal change nephropathy. However, the patient was delivered at 31 weeks gestation by caesarean section. The nephrology team was called in on account of persistent grade 4 edema.

It is questioned whether the case was nephrotic syndrome in pregnancy or preeclampsia. The differentiation between the diagnosis of nephrotic syndrome in pregnancy and preeclampsia is important and could have affected the management of this patient, especially the timing of the patient’s delivery. It also underscores the need for collaboration between the obstetricians and the nephrologists in managing patients with all forms of renal disorders in pregnant patients.
