Abstract

Background: The active search for disease among apparently healthy people is a fundamental aspect of prevention which is embodied in screening, which has been identified as the search for unrecognized disease or defect by means of rapidly applied tests, examinations or other procedures in apparently healthy individuals.

Objectives: This study assessed the knowledge, attitude and practice of disease screening among adults in Egor Local Government Area, Edo State.

Materials/methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out among 270 adults aged 18 – 65 years, residing in Egor Local Government Area, Edo State using interviewer’s administered questionnaires. Respondents were selected using a multistage sampling technique. Data was analyzed using IBM SPSS version 21 software. Level of significance was set as p < 0.05.

Results: The study revealed that only 16.0% of the respondents had good knowledge of disease screening. Eighty four percent of the respondents had positive attitude towards disease screening however only 46.3% practiced disease screening.

Conclusion: The poor knowledge observed by majority of the respondents in this study emphasizes the need for proper education of individuals about the value of disease screening. This will likely increase their practice of disease screening.
