Abstract

Aim: Handicap post stroke is likely to be more relevant to patients and family than impairment or disability. The purpose of this study was to assess the Barthel index as a predictor of handicap

Method: One hundred and twelve participants with a diagnosis of stroke were prospectively enrolled. Fifteen clinical variables, the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score on admission, and the barthel index at 7th day were the independent variables. The modified Rankin scale at 6 weeks was the outcome variable. Multiple regression models were used to analyze predictors of handicap

Results: After adjusting for other variables, the multivariable analysis showed that handicap in stroke is significantly associated with the Barthel index (p<0.05) and atrial fibrillation (p<0.05).

Conclusion: Barthel index is an important predictor of handicap following stroke. Atrial fibrillation should also be considered in the interpretation of handicap in stroke.

Keywords: Stroke, Barthel index, handicap, modified Rankin scale
