HIV/AIDS Prevention Activities of Faith-Based Christian Organizations and Empowerment of Female Members in the Southern Senatorial District of Cross River State, Nigeria

Abstract

The study investigated the HIV/AIDS prevention activities of faith based Christian organizations in the southern senatorial District of Cross River State, Nigeria. One hypothesis guided the study which was conducted using the ex-post facto research design. A validated instrument was used for data collection from a study population of eight thousand eight hundred (8800) female members of the faith based organizations. Eight hundred and eighty (880) members were selected for the study using stratified random sampling and the resulting data were analysed using the one way analysis of variance. The results showed that HIV/AIDS activities of faith-based Christian organizations significantly influenced the empowerment of female members in all six dimensions of empowerment which included skills acquisition, income generation, decision making, reducing illiteracy rate, increased food production and healthy lifestyle. Based on these findings, it was recommended that the faith-based Christian organizations should collaborate with relevant agencies, community based workers and non-formal education providers to improve HIV/AIDS prevention service delivery in the study area.
