Is the New Partnership for Africa’s Development an Appropriate Programme for African Continental Integration?

S Makgetlaneng

Abstract

The New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) is the African Union’s socio-political and economic development programme, and one of its tasks is to accelerate African continental integration. The fundamental question is, however, whether it is the appropriate programme for this. Its success depends on the resolution of national, regional and continental socio-political and economic problems. Briefly, its challenge is to solve the structural problem of African countries, adjusting their internal, regional and continental relations to the needs, demands and exigencies of developed countries. This is one of Africa’s key challenges in its continental integration agenda, given that international factors have a decisive impact on the policies of African countries, not only towards developed countries, but also towards other African countries.
