Abstract

Despite the increasing awareness of biogas and its related benefits, the global uptake of the technology is generally low. Recently, there has been an increase in donor community and government driven interest in biogas technology. Following the trend, this paper examines perceptions regarding the adoption and use of biogas and related technologies and looks at women’s perceptions of biogas. Through interviews and a survey that engaged 52 households, it examines the nature and range of biogas associated risks in terms of the adoption and use of the technologies from the perspective of the women in these communities. Benefits of biogas technology are multi-fold and the technology has the capacity to reduce firewood usage.
