Snail rearing: Tool for indigenising poverty alleviation in Lagos State, Nigeria

Abstract

The study investigates snail rearing as an urban agricultural practice in Lagos State, Nigeria. A structured questionnaire was administered to 60 respondents who were systematically selected from 3 divisions in the study area. The study revealed that respondents use the intensive system of rearing with concrete cages and iron/wire mesh cages. With cost price of between N10 and N40, respondents were able to sell their snails at between N60 and N140, while respondents were able to feed their families from the proceeds of the practice. Findings of the study also revealed that most of the respondents are female, single between 30 and 40 years and have B.Sc/HND as the highest level of education. It was recommended that Unified Extension Agents in the area should facilitate the transfer of the technology and dissemination of information on snailery to both rural and urban households in the study area to intensify awareness about importance of snail, ensure sustainable income and poverty reduction
