Livestock husbandry and its impact on employment generation in Aligarh District, U.P. (India)

Abstract

Livestock husbandry is an important sector of agriculture economy. It plays a vital role in household nutritional security, increased income, and employment generation. Livestock farming, however, has been one of the most important value adding farming systems adopted in different
countries. The animal husbandry and dairying sectors have come to play an increasingly significant role in the development of the India. Though milk, meat and egg production has grown manifold since independence, there is need for further increasing production from this sector. Present study was aimed to find out the structure of the livestock development and livestock oriented employment for various socio- economic groups in Aligarh district of Uttar Pradesh. It was found that the level of employment generated or workforce absorption in livestock sector is determined by the size of operational holding as well as social level of the livestock rearers. It revealed that marginal, small and medium size of holding farmers employed about 27- 28% of total workforce in different operations of livestock husbandry. Similarly, socially backward category of farmers like other backward caste (A Category of backward group of the people in India) showed highest percentage (52.85 %) of workforce involve in this sector to cropping system.
