Bibliometric analysis of community based disaster risk management research: trends, intellectual structure, and global collaboration patterns (2005 to 2025)
Abstract
Community based disaster risk management (CBDRM) became a central approach in disaster risk reduction scholarship and practice. Despite the expanding body of literature, a comprehensive bibliometric mapping of the CBDRM research landscape remains limited. This study presents a systematic bibliometric analysis of 332 Scopus indexed documents published between 2005 and 2025, employing Bibliometrix (R) and VOSviewer software tools. The study pursued three objectives: (1) to examine publication trends and growth patterns in CBDRM research; (2) to identify the thematic evolution and intellectual structure of the field; and (3) to map global research collaboration networks and identify leading contributors. The findings revealed a consistent upward trend in annual scientific production, with a notable acceleration after 2020. Keyword analysis identified ‘disaster management’, ‘risk assessment’, and ‘disaster risk reduction’ as the most frequently occurring terms, reflecting the core thematic orientation of the field. The United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Indonesia, and Australia dominated research output, whilst the United Kingdom led in citation impact. Keyword co occurrence analysis revealed five thematic clusters, indicating the multidisciplinary character of CBDRM research spanning environmental sciences, social sciences, and public health. Temporal overlay analysis demonstrated a shift towards emerging themes such as community resilience, climate change adaptation, and sustainability. The study recommended strengthening South to South research collaboration, integrating indigenous knowledge into CBDRM frameworks, and enhancing longitudinal evaluations of community-based interventions.
