Abstract

Recreation facilities, parks and programmes are essential to bring balance in our hectic lives. As professionals and citizens we need to take these services to the public. The importance of recreation participation and programmes should be realised and professionals should be trained to understand the important role recreation plays in a society. Tertiary institutions should realise the gaps and opportunities that could be filled in recreation management training. The current article reviews literature focussing on the importance of recreation participation, the benefits of participation and the impact it has on society in order to lead a quality life. International and national studies have been reviewed and policies of Provincial Government institutions in South Africa were investigated to realise the thrust of Government. This information is used to stress the need to train professionals in recreation management at tertiary institutions. Recommendations are made as to the curriculum that could be offered and the opportunity for long distance learning for those professionals that have no access to tertiary institutions.

Key Words: Benefits, recreation participation, quality of life, training opportunities, tertiary institutions.
