On the Equivalence of Tank Trucks and General Purpose Trucks

Olabode O Alokan

Abstract

Trucking is a business that benefits from segmentation, which is the subdividing of the overall market into homogeneous subsets of customers where any subset(s) may be selected as a target market to be reached with a distinct marketing mix. But the fact that different segments can be identified with particular kinds of vehicles or type of products, suggests that there are natural divisions in the trucking industry. The purpose of this paper is to address the question of the equivalence of the three different kinds of articulated vehicles which are normally used in haulage as prelude to tackling the issue of representation in the various branches of road freight industry, and balance. The uses to which trucks are put, appear to be equal in profitability. Hence, shifts of capacity from one segment to another may not be common.
