AbstractThis paper examined the socio-cultural factors that prevent grandmothers from participating in community development programmes in Nigeria.Importance of participation in community development in relation to gender issues in community development in Nigeria were discussed. Activities of grandmothers that contribute to community development in Nigeria and constraints to their participation were enumerated. This paper recommends that grandmothers should be educated using adult education principles of respect and dialogue. Extension activities should be intensified to ensure that information on community development programmes and grand mothers are
disseminated to adopt new and better ways of carrying out their activities to improve rural communities in Nigeria
