Viewing Television from Different Angles and Perceiving Dissimilar Images

CC Nwachukwu

Abstract

The need continually arises, to appraise and re-appraise the television medium in order to affirm that it is still serving society as well as it ought to, and as it was designed to; as medium, as a concept and as a culture. This endeavour attempts to ascertain and examine the stance of professionals and scholars on issues of the television medium. This, in effect, tests the desirability and relevance of television as well know it today. This paper analyses some of the positions taken for and against television and, in furtherance, aligns these thoughts and comes up with the broad view. It tries to moderate the excesses and present a balanced case for the medium called television. This study has succeeded in juxtaposing the windward and leeward positions on television. It has also affirmed that the dialectics weigh more in favour of the medium. Television is seen and known to play both crucial and critical roles in societal integration, as well as development. Television, therefore, ought to be received, accepted and supported wholeheartedly and in a continuing manner. The research methodology here is both qualitative and historical.
