Session B5

Management for sustainable use — Rehabilitating rangelands

David Tongway

Abstract

Heavy or inappropriate grazing has resulted in changes in resource state in some rangelands. These rangelands may no longer deliver their former natural resources to users and have lowered animal productivity. In cases where such changes are irreversible, or when recovery does not take place within a time period acceptable to the land users, appropriate intervention to initiate recovery may be required. Existing rehabilitation techniques within the prevailing socio-economic context is limited and often suffers from a lack of fundamental understanding of ecosystem dynamics.
