Presidential address:

Is the Grassland Scientist becoming and extinct species within the context of scientific research?

GN Smit

Abstract

While the discipline of Grassland Science entails more than just research, I would like, in this presidential addres, to focus on the state of range and forage reearch in particular. Some of the statements made here may be considered controversial, and not every person will agree with everything that is said. This is intentional. Hopefully this will stimulate thought and debate about this very important subject. The views expressed here are my own and not necessarily those of the grassland Society of Southern Africa.
A substantial number of previous presidential addresses referred to the role of the Grassland Society in a rapidly changing environment. While at the same time it is difficult to foresee to what extent change will take place and how it will affect science, it is clear that rapid change has taken place, and is continuing to do so. In this address I also want to discuss some of these changes and speculateon the future role of the Grassland Society of Southern Africa.
