Abstract

A new diploid cultivar of Lolium multiflorum Lam., South Africa's most important temperate forage grass species, has recently been released by the Department of Agricultural Technical Services (Natal Region). Named Midmar, the cultivar was evolved from a wide range of local and exotic accessions by the application of standard grass breeding techniques. Midmar is superior to most existing commercially available material in such respects as dry matter yield, winter production, resistance to leaf rust and uniformity. Certified seed will become available in commercial quantities early in 1976.
