Abstract

Children are tomorrow’s leaders and parents have enormous responsibility to cater for their welfare. Proper parenting is very necessary for any nation to get rid of anti-social behavior in youths. In this study, we explored the influence of parental literacy level on childcare and parenting styles, using the Ex-post-facto design. Two hypotheses were formulated to guide the study and 200 (two hundred) primary five and six pupils from Cross River State, Nigeria were sampled for the study. Results showed that parental literacy level had no significant effects on proper child care but had profound influence on their parenting styles. The implications of this finding were high-lighted and discussed with a recommendation that Government should reactivate adult education by opening adult education centers in all local government areas in Nigeria.

Keywords: literacy, childcare and parenting.
