The Relationship Between Some Psychological Attributes and Effectiveness of Agricultural Education Programme Administrators in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria

Abstract

The study was conducted to determine the relationship between some psychological variables (anxiety, introversion, extroversion and locus of control) and Agricultural Education programme administrators’ effectiveness in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. An instrument entitled Psychological Determinants of Agricultural Education Programme Administrators’ Effectiveness Adaptive scale (PDAEPAES) comprising 50 items was developed for data collection. Each variable in the study had 10 Likert-type items of Strongly Agree (SA), Agree (A), Disagree (D) and Strongly Disagree (SD). The instrument was trial-tested on 33 agricultural educators in Akwa Ibom State. The reliability indices of 0.96, 0.82, 0.84, 0.96 and 0.98 were obtained for anxiety, introversion, extroversion, locus of control and effectiveness respectively. Three hundred and sixty (360) out of four hundred and seventy four (474) secondary school Agricultural Science teachers were served with the questionnaire. The result of the study revealed that there is a significant relationship between psychological factors (extroversion, locus of control, introversion in that order and secondary school Agricultural Education programme administrators’ effectiveness. It was concluded that psychological factors are important variables in secondary school Agricultural Education programme administrators’ effectiveness. In the light of these findings it was recommended among others that personnel selected as secondary school Agricultural education programme administrators should be encouraged to develop those psychological traits that could improve their effectiveness.
