Transfusion medicine in paediatrics

Abstract

Transfusion Medicine involves all activities of bleeding donors, ensuring safe techniques for bleedings, conservation of the donated blood or blood products up to and including actual safety transfusion to the recipients. This life saving procedure has been challenged by yet other life threatening complications such as emerging new infections and metabolic complications like Transfusion - Related Acute Lung Injury (TRALI). Attempts at averting some of these complications through autologous donation before surgical procedure where massive loss is anticipated has created some controversies. The thrust of this paper is to review some of these latest development and its implications in Paediatric Practice.
