Abstract

Field trials were carried out during the first rainy season of 2005 in Abomey-Calavi. A randomized bloc design with six treatments and four replicates was set up at four different dates and places. This study attempts to analyze the opportunity to develop a pest control approach, based on the use of alternative host plants of Maruca vitrata (Fabricius) as trap crop and source of natural enemies. It consists in realization of some mixed cropping patterns of cowpea and Sesbania cannabina. In fact, it is question of two varieties: «Kpodjiguêguê» (represented by the group of treatments T1, T2 and T3) and «Tawa» (constituted by the second group of treatments T4, T5 and T6). Each of these varieties was grown, first in monoculture (T1 and T4) and then with two lines of S. cannabina surrounded the sole cowpea (T2 and T5), whereas the last was with four lines of cowpea alternated two lines of S. cannabina (T3 and T6). The larval population was recorded from sampling made every three days. The result of this study shows that T2 and T5 ensured the best control of M. vitrata in spite of the absence of the pest's larvae on S. cannabina plant.
