Abstract

An autopsy is the examination of the body of a dead person.
· It involves systematic dissection of human tissue after death. 
· It may be restricted to a specific organ region of the body.
· Autopsies are performed to determine the cause of death, for legal purposes, and for education and research.
· The body is opened in a manner that does not interfere with an open-casket service. 
· Autopsy rate has drastically dropped from 50% to less than 10% over the last 50 years. 
· To safeguard against further losses of human lives, post mortem examination should remain the ultimate medical diagnostic tool.
