Abstract

Gallic acid is one of the phytochemicals that is naturally found in Acacia nilotica plant. Gallic acid is an organic acid with the IUPAC name 3, 4, 5- trihydroxybenzoic acid that has chemical formula C7H6O5. Pure Gallic acid is a colorless crystalline organic powder. Staphylococcus epidermidis, gram positive bacteria, is one of the most commonly known bacteria to colonize wounds, cause infection, and delay the wound healing process. In this study, Antibacterial activity of Gallic acid against Staphylococcus epidermidis was evaluated using antibacterial susceptibility assay. Three different Gallic acid concentrations were examined for their antibacterial efficacies on Staphylococcus epidermidis growth inhibition. At 50µg/ml Gallic acid inhibited 72.2%, and at 100µg/ml dosage it inhibited 90.4%, whereas 97% of inhibition was stated at a dose of 200µg/ml Gallic acidur results show that Gallic acid is a novel therapeutic agent with antibacterial properties.
