Peer Review

Manuscripts submitted to Bayero Journal of Nursing and Health Care pass through the following review process;

  1. Desk review: Immediately manuscript is submitted, a desk officer handling the email receives it and reviews it to ensure that it is in line with the focus and scope of the journal. If it is in line with the scope of the journal, the manuscript is submitted to an editor for editorial review. If the manuscript is not in line with the scope of the journal, the desk officer submits it to the Editor in Chief for confirmation and possible ‘desk rejection’
  2. Editorial review: All manuscripts that successfully pass desk review are sent to editors who review the appropriacy of the manuscript in terms of the text format, words limit, number of tables and figures and reference style. Manuscripts that are judged to be relevant and prepared according to the guideline of the journal are then sent for peer review. Manuscripts that are not properly prepared are reverted to Authors to make necessary correction before they are sent for peer review.
  3. Peer Review: All manuscripts that pass Editorial Review are sent to two Peer Reviewers with expertise and specialization similar to that of the manuscript. The Journal utilize a double-blind approach in all the review processes. Independent Reviewers are sent the manuscripts excluding all Author identifiers to take care of bias and conflict of interest. The reviewers are expected to track their comments and observations within the manuscript and then enter the summary into the reviewer comment form.

Reviews are given instructions on the review process which they are initially expected to complete within two weeks. A ‘reviewer comment form/guide’ is also sent to the reviewers. After two weeks the reviewers are reminded and given additional time (usually not more than two weeks) depending on the convenience of the reviewers. Reviewers who don’t comply are still given at most additional two weeks for the last time. So the maximum period given for peer review is 6 (six) weeks. If a reviewer however fails to revert the manuscript within the period, the manuscript is withdrawn and sent to different reviewer. Reviewers can make the following decisions after their review;

              A= Accepted without any corrections

              B= Accepted with minor corrections to Editor's satisfaction

              C=Accepted with minor corrections to reviewer's satisfaction

              D= Accept with major corrections to reviewer's satisfaction

              E = Rejected

A manuscript is considered to have passed Peer Review when both the two Reviewers accepts the manuscripts for publication (without corrections A, with minor corrections B and C as well as with major corrections D). The manuscript is instantly rejected where both reviewers recommended that it should be rejected E. Where one of the reviewers recommends rejection and the other recommended acceptance, then the manuscript is sent to a third reviewer so as to have two similar decisions.

All peer reviewers are given appointment letters and a printed copy of the journal which contain the manuscript they reviewed to serve as motivation.

  1. Corrections: All the manuscripts accepted for publication by reviewers are sent back to the Authors to make all identified corrections. The corrected manuscripts by Authors that were recommended for C and D are reverted to the peer reviewers who verifies that all corrections have been made.
  2. Final Acceptance. All accepted manuscripts (including those verified by peer reviewers) are submitted to the editors and Editor in chief for final acceptance.
