Strategies for mining development in the SADC region

IB Matshediso

Abstract

The SADC Region is well endowed with mineral resources. Geological studies have revealed that the SADC region has one of the richest geological prospects. Many good mineral development opportunities exist in the SADC region. However, over the past few years new exploration and mining development has lagged behind that of other regions with similar mineral endowments. SADC has failed to attract exploration funding for its mineral sector commensurate with its mineral potential. The recovery of SADC's mining sector will require provision of a suitable mineral investment environment including a shift in member states' role from participatory to regulatory. The shift of roles will be best achieved through policy changes on the SADC mining industry's regulation and promotion to enable the private sector to take the lead in mineral development. This paper explores some of the changes necessary to enhance the mining investment potential of the region.
