Estimation of prevalences of urinary schistosomiasis using haematuria

O Amali

Abstract

A survey was carried-out to determine urinary schistosomiasis infection among pupils in 230 evenly spread primary schools in Benue State of Nigeria. In each school visited, urine samples of 100 randomly selected pupils were examined for Schistosoma haematobium infection and evidence of haematuria. The data collected were subjected to correlations and a regression analysis from which positive correlation and a regression equation were obtained for the relationship between the number of pupils with S. haematobium infection and the number with haematuria. The possible use of the regression equation obtained for estimation of prevalences of urinary schistosomiasis foruse in planning and evaluation of control programmes against the disease is discussed.
