Combined Developmental Constructs and Job Performance of Librarians in University Libraries in South-South Geo-Political Zone of Nigeria

Abstract

The need for constant update of knowledge and skills in the discharge of the Librarian’s duties has been variously expressed in both daily newspapers and professional journals. The empirical justification of this emphasis is scanty. To satisfy and fill these gaps, the relationship between some developmental constructs and job performance of
librarians was investigated. A validated questionnaire measuring six constructs was administered on a sample of 172 librarians in the South-South geo-political zone of Nigeria. Multiple regression analysis was done on the data. The results showed that librarians’ on-the-job performance depends significantly on the combined effect of the six
developmental constructs. Further analysis showed that only supervision and membership of the Nigerian Library Association (NLA) contributed significantly to the prediction of performance of librarians. It is recommended that University Management should provide for the financing of librarians’ membership and participation in the activities of NLA to enhance their professional development and services.
