El cacique de Ornofay: la construcción textual y visual del filósofo salvaje

Abstract

Este artículo analiza la figura del cacique indio de Ornofay en la pintura y la literatura cubana del siglo XIX. El objetivo es mostrar cómo esta figura,  producida por el discurso y completamente ignorada hasta la fecha, sirve de argumento retórico en los manuales de historia a favor del proyecto  colonizador y, al mismo tiempo, de crítica a España en los poemas nacionalistas. El periodo en que surge esta figura coincide con las propuestas  reformistas e independentistas en la isla y en Hispanoamérica, que toman al indígena americano como argumento en contra del poder colonial.  Aquí sugiero que los poemas dedicados al cacique de Ornofay reescriben y se apropian de esta figura para crear espacios de muertes y memorias,  que les recuerdan a los cubanos y a los españoles la pérdida de vidas humanas a causa de la colonización.

English title: The Indian Chief of Ornofay: the Textual and Visual Construction of the Savage Philosopher

This article analyzes the figure of the Indian chief of Ornofay in Cuban literature and paintings of the nineteenth century. The objective is to show  how this figure, produced by discourse and completely ignored today, serves as a rhetorical argument in historical manuals in favor of the  colonizing project and, at the same time, as a criticism of Spain in several Cuban poems. As I argue, the period in which this figure resurfaces  coincides with reformist and independentist projects in Cuba and Latin America, which take the Native Americans as an argument against the  colonial power. Here I suggest that the poems dedicated to the cacique of Ornofay rewrite and appropriate this figure to create spaces of deaths  and memories, which remind Cubans and Spaniards of the loss of human lives because of the colonization.
