Understanding colorectal cancer: risk factors, molecular subtypes, and therapeutic approaches
Abstract
Colorectal cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality worldwide, with an increasing incidence, particularly in developing countries. This manuscript explores the multifaceted aspects of colorectal cancer, including its epidemiology, risk factors, molecular and histologic subtypes, and advancements in diagnostic and treatment modalities. Key risk factors such as genetic predisposition, lifestyle, and environmental factors are discussed. Additionally, the significant diagnostic advancements, including colonoscopy, imaging techniques, and molecular classifications like consensus molecular subtypes (CMS), which have refined prognostic evaluations, have been discussed. Advancements in treatment strategies, such as immunotherapy, endoscopy, and enhanced surgical techniques like laparoscopic and complete mesocolic excision, have improved patient outcomes. Despite these advances, there exist some challenges, including late-stage diagnoses, metastasis, and quality-oflife concerns post-treatment. This review underscores the critical importance of early detection, multidisciplinary treatment approaches, and targeted therapies for optimizing survival rates and long-term quality of life. Future research directions include exploring novel biomarkers for early diagnosis, refining molecular-based therapies, and addressing survivorship challenges for colorectal cancer patients.
