Lineament extraction and structural analysis using total magnetic intensity (TMI) and shuttle radar topographic mission (SRTM) data in Rogo Northwestern Nigeria
Abstract
This study evaluates the application of GIS and remote sensing in lineament extraction using total magnetic intensity (TMI) and shuttle radar topographic emission (SRTM) data. The method involves extraction, comparison and combination of lineaments within the study area. Extracting lineaments using SRTM and TMI data analysis involves processing the data to enhance linear features, then
applying algorithms to identify and digitize these features as "lineaments" within ArcGIS 10.8.2 software, essentially highlighting potential fault zones or structural trends based on variations in the magnetic field caused by underlying geological structures. Digital extraction and lineament analysis from the data obtained were processed to evaluate the performance of the datasets for the extraction. Results of the lineaments extracted were identified and compared, lineaments extracted from TMI data are longer and few (54) in number compared with SRTM which are many (109) and shorter in density and distribution. Combined density map highlight areas of structural complexity. The complex areas from the SRTM image corresponds to quartzite ridges that reflect faults, while a complex area in the north identified from the TMI lineaments could reflect faults in the subsurface that might be of exploration interest.
