Abstract

Herein, we report the swelling and antimicrobial properties of a new hydrogel (VSi-CTS-g-PAAm) synthesized from vinylsilane-chitosan and acrylamide. The results showed that hydrogels synthesized by varying the molar ratios of vinylsilane –chitosan/acrylamide were all formed within 10 min. It also showed that the swelling ratio was high (1,179%) in alkaline solution. Further analyses carried out on
the hydrogel revealed that it has antibacterial effect against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), and Escherichia coli (E. coli), with 99.9% killing in 8 h. The inclusion of acrylamide into the vinylsilane chitosan backbone improved the physico-chemical properties of the hydrogel, such as, the swelling ability, the strength, and the antimicrobial potency. This study therefore revealed that the VSi-CTS
PAAm hydrogel could contribute immensely in biomedical application and also be of benefit in wastewater treatment.
