Assessment of geohelminth infection prevalence among primary school children in Wudil Local Government Area, Kano State, Nigeria
Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence and intensity of geohelminth infections among primary school children in Wudil Local Government Area (LGA), Kano State, Nigeria. A total of 440 pupils, aged between five and above ten years were randomly selected from six public primary schools for stool collection and examination. The stool samples were analyzed using the Kato-Katz and Formal-Ether concentration techniques, and each was microscopically examined for helminth eggs. Statistical analyses was performed using IBM SPSS version 20.0. The overall prevalence of geohelminth infection among the 440 samples analyzed was 42.9%. The most prevalent species was Ascaris lumbricoides (21.6%), followed by Trichuris trichiura (17.7%), Hookworm (2.3%), and Strongyloides stercoralis (1.34%). These findings underscore the persistent burden of soil-transmitted helminthiasis among school-aged children in the study area and highlight the need for continuous deworming and hygiene education programs.
