Abstract

Efficient flow of market information is critical to the performance of agricultural supply chains, particularly in perishable commodity systems such as fish marketing. This study examined market information access and its influence on the performance of the fish supply chain in Lagos State, Nigeria. Primary data were collected from 120 fish supply chain actors using structured questionnaires administered across selected markets in the state. Descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis were employed to analyse sources of market information, frequency of access, and key performance indicators. The results revealed that the dominant sources of market information were fellow traders (71.0%), market associations (62.3%), and mobile phones/social media (55.0%), while formal information systems played a limited role. The regression results showed that frequency of market information access, reliability of information, and use of ICT-based sources had positive and statistically significant effects on supply chain performance. Marketing experience also contributed positively to performance outcomes. The study concludes that improved access to timely, reliable, and technology-driven market information enhances pricing efficiency, coordination, and overall supply chain performance. However, persistent reliance on informal information channels and limited use of digital platforms constrain optimal performance. The study recommends strengthening ICT-based market information systems, improving formal information dissemination channels, and enhancing the capacity of supply chain actors to effectively utilise market information for improved efficiency and sustainability.
