Abstract

Gatifloxacin ocular films were prepared by using sodium alginate and chitosan by solvent casting method. The prepared films were surface cross-linked by Ca+2 ions. Weight variation, thickness, folding endurance, surface pH, mechanical strength, swelling index, vapor permeability and bioadhesive strength of the ocular films were evaluated. In vitrodrug release study was carried out by using a semi-permeable membrane. The
ocular films were smooth, and the evaluation tests carried out on the films were satisfactory. According to the results, 97% of the drug was released from the formulation containing a combination of 2% sodium alginate and 1% chitosan over a period of 24 h. The ocular films were found to be active against selected microorganisms in antimicrobial efficacy test. From in vitro drug release and antimicrobial efficacy studies it was concluded that the surface cross-linked ocular films prepared with a combination of 2% sodium
alginate and 1% chitosan showed a potential to sustain drug release at the ocular site.
