Abstract

Learning strategies refer to cognitive operations that individuals use to achieve a learning goal. This article reviews the major research methods for investigating test-taking strategies, and appraises studies which investigate the processes used in listening and speaking, reading and writing pertaining to L2 testing. Implications for the L2 classroom are then discussed. The review reveals that several methodologies have been used by researchers to elicit information about strategies that L2 learners of various language backgrounds use. These studies have produced insightful findings which have useful implications for the L2 classroom. The review also shows that research on L2 test-taking needs increased attention.
