Reading activities and programmes required to encourage grade three learners to develop the reading interest in Vhembe District

Abstract

There are various reading programmes and activities that teacher can use to help learners to develop the reading interest. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of reading activities and programme required to encourage grade three learners to develop the reading interest in Vhembe district. This paper followed the qualitative research methodology. The case study was employed as the research design for the study. Eight subject teachers were selected to participate in this study. The purposive sampling method was utilised. Data were gathered by making use of face to face interviews, observation and document analysis. The following findings emerged from the study: Firstly the teachers encourage learners to read by using the reading programs and activities. Secondly the other finding is that subject teachers and teacher librarians have initiated different types of reading programs and activities to encourage learners to read. Recommendation are made based on the findings of the study that, concerning the reading programmes the relevant workshops addressing the various types of reading programmes stipulated for the specific grade level should be arranged so that subject teachers will be aware of the available reading programmes that they can use effectively to encourage learners to read.
