The impact of teacher-learner relationships on learners’ academic success in primary school of Soutpansberg West Circuit

Abstract

The study investigated the influence of the relationship between teachers and learners on the academic performance of learners at a primary school in Vhembe District. This research was an exploratory case study involving intermediate phase. The study employed the qualitative research methods. Purposive sampling technique was used to select participants for this study. This consisted of 3 teachers and 3 learners in the intermediate phase. Semi-structured interviews and observation schedules were applied to collect data from participants. Data was analysed through thematic analysis. The study established that the relationship between teachers and learners plays a significant function in the academic performance of learners. Learners who have a close relationship with their teachers excel in their school activities. The study recommends that teachers should develop good relationship with learners to ensure that learner’s main goal of attaining relevant and quality education is achieved.
