Experiences of newly qualified professional nurses registered as community service practitioners in health institutions in the Limpopo Province

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the experiences of newly qualified professional nurses, registered as community service practitioners in the Limpopo province This article is part 1 of a PhD study. A qualitative, explorative, descriptive, contextual research design was used to describe the experiences of the newly qualified professional nurses. Purposive sampling was used. For this study focus group discussions were conducted with the NQPNs registered as CSPs, comprising of five participants per hospital with a total of four focus groups, in four hospitals. In total, there were 20 participants. Negative experiences of newly qualified nurses, registered as community service practitioners, emerged during data collection. Challenges experienced during the period of community service, Integration of theory into practice and improved Community Service Practice needs were the four themes that emerged from this study.
