Touting by the youths at International Airports in Nigeria: An Irksome to international tourists

Kola O. Odeku

Abstract

Nigeria is facing a high prevalence of youth unemployment, and as such, these youths look for any means to get money. One of such means isĀ  touting, often at international airports in Nigeria. On a daily basis, international air travelers arrive at designated international airports to visitĀ  and/or tour various historical and heritage sites spread across Nigeria. A major challenge at these airports is that the management allows touting of different types and forms to thrive with impunity. This is mindboggling and a total disgrace to the image of the country as international tourists often have unpleasant experiences at the hands of touts, while the law enforcement officers at the airports turn a blind eye. This article looks at touting at the international arrival entry points and various criminal misdemeanors and irritation being caused by touts to international tourist visitors on arrival to the country. It also looked at the implications of touting on tourism and offered useful recommendations to curb touting.
