An examination of methodological strategies in the study of Siswati folktales using a desktop design

Abstract

This research presents a desktop-based analysis of the methodological techniques used in the study of Siswati folktales. The aim is to look at how various research techniques have been used and evaluate how well they interpret the structures and meanings of folktales. The objectives are to identify popular approaches, assess their advantages and disadvantages, and decide whether or not they are appropriate for Siswati folklore study. The study is based on the writings of Vladimir Propp and Claude Lévi-Strauss and is guided by a structuralist theoretical framework. A systematic review and document analysis of the body of current literature are part of the qualitative desktop approach. The findings show that structural and thematic approaches predominate, with little incorporation of indigenous viewpoints. The discussion draws attention to methodological flaws and the necessity of frameworks with a cultural foundation. By highlighting the significance of context-sensitive techniques, the study advances knowledge. It recommends incorporating indigenous knowledge systems.
