Analysis Of Types And Areas Of Agricultural News Covered In Selected Nigerian Newspapers (2005 And 2006)

Abstract



The study focused on the analysis of the types and areas of agriculture covered in
the Guardian, Thisday, Punch, Tide, Pioneer and New waves newspaper (2005 and 2006). A total number of 438 newspaper publications of the six mentioned newspapers were selected based on stratified random sampling. Data gotten in this study was analysed using tables and percentages. Findings reveal that out of a total number of 160 items on agriculture identified in the six newspapers, 28% were found to be commercial information, 13% legal information, 38% scientific/technical information and 21% social/cultural information. For the areas of agriculture, out of the 160 items on agriculture identified, 9% were on crop production, 6% on soil science, 15% on animal production, 7% on forestry,
8% on agricultural extension/research, 20% on food science and technology, and
4% on agricultural engineering.
