Abstract

Vocabulary development has formed the core of language study. In this respect, it has become imperative to study English registers. This paper is an attempt to examine different registers in relation to field of discourse, mode of discourse and tenor of discourse. It also investigate instances of language in action and the environment and situation where registers could be used without sounding confusing to the audience. The paper concludes that registers should not be used unnecessarily as this will amount to violation of style, purpose and the interest of the audience since the aim of language is to communicate meaning and understanding.
