Predictors of caregiver burden among informal caregivers of haemodialysis patients in selected private hospitals in coastal Karnataka, India
Abstract
Objective: To determine caregiver burden levels and identify the factors that influence care burden levels among informal caregivers of haemodialysis patients who were diagnosed with end-stage kidney disease in the Udupi district, Karnataka, India.
Design: Cross-sectional study
Setting: Haemodialysis units in hospitals located in the Udupi district, Karnataka, India.
Participants: A total of 186 unpaid carers of patients who had been receiving haemodialysis in the hospital for more than three months were enrolled in the study.
Main outcome measure: Caregiver burden level and factors associated with caregiver burden, were assessed using the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) scale.
Results: Among 186 informal caregivers, 51 (27.40%) experienced no to mild burden, 114 (61.3%) experienced mild to moderate burden, and 21 (11.3%) experienced moderate to severe burden. Multinomial logistic regression revealed that functional status was the strongest factor for the transition from moderate to mild burden (AOR=0.06, p=0.046).
Conclusion: This study highlights the need to understand the burden of informal caregivers to design focused interventions and support initiatives that mitigate their difficulties.
